Six Things Nobody Puts on a Label
If you read nothing else, read these.
Whether the cloth was washed before it was cut or after it was sewn. This changes the sizing, the seams and the consistency between pieces, and it is almost never stated. Section 02.
That stone-washed does not always mean pumice. Producers may use pumice, enzymes, mechanical action or a combination, and the label rarely distinguishes. Section 03.
That shrinkage has two numbers, not one. A cloth moves differently along its length than across its width, so a single figure describes half of what happens. Section 04.
That the test should be on the finished piece. A roll of cloth has no hems, no seams and no embroidery, which are exactly where the surprises are. Section 04.
That some finishes become part of the cloth and others diminish with washing. A physical change does not reverse, while applied softeners, resins and coatings have very different lifespans. Section 05.
That embroidery settles at its own rate. A dense stitched area responds to water differently from the cloth around it. Section 04.
Reading the Label
The vocabulary, and how much of it is defined.
That the cloth was washed after weaving and before it was sold, rather than going out loom-state. Washing relaxes the yarn, removes part of the shrinkage that would otherwise happen in your machine, and softens the hand. It is a broad description: it says something happened in water, and nothing about how.
No. Pre-washed tells you the linen was washed before it was sold. Stone-washed traditionally refers to a softened, worn effect produced by mechanical abrasion, historically with pumice, though the term is now used commercially for similar results reached other ways as well. A pre-washed linen is not necessarily stone-washed.
Yes. Water, detergent, temperature and movement will relax and soften a cloth on their own. What they do is release the tension the yarn was held under during weaving, and take off residues; nothing is deliberately abraded or enzymatically modified. The softness arrives more slowly by this route.
It identifies a result. There is no standard behind the word, and it can cover a mechanical treatment, an enzyme treatment, a chemical softener applied to the surface, or simply a thorough wash. If it matters to you, the word alone will not tell you.

The same treatment has different consequences depending on when it happens.
This is the single most useful question on the list, and almost nobody asks it. Washing the cloth first lets much of its initial relaxation happen before the finished dimensions are set. Washing the completed piece lets cloth, seams, hems and embroidery settle together. Neither route guarantees identical sizing on its own: the dimensional change still has to be measured and allowed for.
Fabric-washed: the cloth is treated before it is cut, so most of its relaxing happens before anyone decides the finished dimensions. Garment-washed: the completed piece goes in, and cloth, seams and edges settle together, which usually looks more visibly lived-in. Neither route gives identical sizing by itself. The change has to be measured and allowed for either way.

Yes. The enzyme treatment can be applied at the finished-piece stage, which is standard practice in garment manufacturing. In that case the edges and the stitching are exposed to it as well, and how gently that was done matters more than it does on a flat roll of cloth.
Not automatically, although the two often travel together. Dyeing a finished piece involves water, heat and agitation, so some softening and some relaxation happen as a by-product. That is not the same as a wash applied as a finish, with its own recipe and its own intended result.

Two ways of reaching a similar hand, and what each one removes.
Not necessarily. Traditional stone washing tumbles the textile with pumice or another abrasive medium. Modern finishing may use enzymes instead, or mechanical action, or a combination, to reach a similar softened and worn appearance. The enzymatic route is known in the trade as bio-stoning, and retail descriptions do not always say which one was used.
The term is not regulated, so nobody is breaking a rule. It has drifted into describing an appearance rather than a method, which is exactly why the useful question is not what the finish is called but what was done.
Stone washing relies on physical abrasion: pumice or another abrasive medium moves against the cloth and changes its surface. Enzyme washing uses cellulase, a biological catalyst that breaks bonds in the cellulose at the fibre surface so that the weakened fibrils come away with the movement of the drum.
Both can reduce or alter the exposed surface, by different means. What the result looks like depends on the enzyme formulation, its concentration, pH, temperature, treatment time, mechanical action and the construction of the cloth itself. Those variables are the reason two products carrying the same finish name can behave quite differently.
At an equivalent effect it can spare the cloth the heavy mechanical abrasion pumice involves, and it tends to run more evenly, with no stone fragments to pick out afterwards. Gentler is not the same as harmless. Too much concentration, time or drum action alters strength, weight and surface, and the treatment has to be controlled and properly stopped at the end.
A cellulase treatment aimed at the fuzz rather than at the hand. It removes the small fibre ends standing up from the surface, which leaves the cloth smoother, reduces pilling and makes the colour read cleaner. Same family of enzymes, different objective.
Yes, if pushed. Both work by taking material off the surface, and taken far enough that shows up as fuzz, thinner edges, weaker seams and more variation between batches. A well-controlled treatment leaves a strong cloth. The point is that stone-washed on a label is not a quality claim, because it does not say how far the process was taken.

What has already happened, and what is left to happen at your house.
Not necessarily. It means washed, and how much shrinkage that removed depends on the temperature, the duration and the mechanical action. A short cool wash takes off very little. Ask for a figure rather than assuming the word covers it.
Yes. Pre-washing removes part of the initial dimensional change, and how much is left cannot be read off the word alone: it depends on the construction of the cloth, what was done to it before, the washing temperature, the mechanical action, how it is dried and how many times.
If you are choosing a size, ask. An untreated cloth tends to change more noticeably at the first wash and pre-washing reduces what is left, but how much cannot be read off a label. Anyone quoting a figure should give two, one for length and one for width, and say what wash produced them. Without those conditions a single percentage tells you very little.
Because a woven cloth can behave differently along its length and across its width. Warp and weft may use different yarns at different densities and are held under different tensions during weaving, so dimensional change should be measured and reported separately rather than reduced to one average.
It is also why a single number can hide a problem. Averaging the two lets a large figure in one direction disappear behind a small one in the other, which is why testing guidance says to report them separately.
They answer different questions. Testing the cloth isolates how the fabric itself behaves, which is what production planning needs. Testing the finished piece also takes in the hems, the seams, the embroidery and the way it was made, which is the closer picture of what a customer will actually put in a machine.
A stitched area is denser than the cloth around it, uses a different thread, and was worked under its own tension. It responds to water at its own rate, which can show as a very slight drawing-in around the motif at the first wash. It usually settles with use, and stabiliser and stitch density are what determine how much of it there is.

What the hand can tell you, and what only time can.
You can tell soft from crisp. You cannot tell how the soft was arrived at. A cloth relaxed by long washing and one abraded with pumice can feel very similar in the shop and behave differently over years, which is the whole reason for asking rather than feeling.
Because the term covers a wide range. Intensity and duration of the treatment, the weight of the base cloth, the weave, the quality of the yarn: all of it moves the result. The word describes the intention, not the recipe.
A physical change already made to the cloth does not undo itself; you cannot put material back. Applied finishes are another matter, and they vary enormously. Some surface softeners fade quickly, which is why a cloth that felt remarkable in the shop can feel ordinary by the third month. Resins and coatings built for durability go the other way, lasting through many cycles and changing gradually rather than disappearing.
It generally continues to soften and relax with use and washing. How far that goes depends on the original cloth, the finish it started with and how it is looked after. Softer over time describes a change in hand, not an unlimited improvement in every property: colour and surface definition move as well.
Slightly damp, on the reverse, with steam, and following the care label rather than the dial where there is embroidery. Linen that has dried completely will resist being pressed; misting it and leaving it a few minutes solves that. The longer version is in Two Napkins, Two Finishes.
No. The fibre has low elastic recovery and creases regardless of finish. What changes is the appearance of the crease: soft and diffuse on washed linen, sharp on a crisp cloth. A genuinely crease-resistant result requires an additional chemical finish, which is a different product.

What your machine can and cannot do.
Not the industrial result, which depends on chemistry, load ratios and machine action a domestic drum cannot reproduce. Home laundering does relax and soften linen over time. It is a different thing arriving at a similar place, rather than the same process run slowly.
Because nothing is moving while it dries. In a tumble dryer the fibres are flexed and separated continuously; on a line they set in place as the water leaves. Line-dried linen taken while still slightly damp and folded, or given a short tumble at the end, keeps much more of its softness.
Conventional softeners work by depositing lubricating substances on the fibre surface. Repeated use, or too much of it, can reduce absorbency and change the hand, which is why linen care instructions routinely advise against them for napkins and towels in particular.
Neither reproduces an industrial finish, and the two are not interchangeable. An acidic rinse can reduce some alkaline and mineral residue; bicarbonate does the opposite, raising alkalinity, and is used for other cleaning purposes. Any softer feel that follows comes from removing build-up rather than from recreating a stone or enzyme wash.

Before cutting, or after sewing, or not at all. A seller who knows their own supply chain answers this in one line.
Washing and movement, mechanical abrasion, enzymes, an applied softener, or some combination. All of them produce softness. They do not have the same effect on the surface, on strength, or on how the cloth behaves after a year of washing.
A measured figure, given separately for length and width, and tied to a stated wash. "It is pre-shrunk" on its own is not an answer.
The finished piece is the one with hems, seams and embroidery on it, and those are where the surprises live.
If the answer is that it is called stone-washed because that is what the effect looks like, you have learned something useful, and you have learned it from someone willing to tell you.

None of the three is a grade of linen. All of them can be applied to good cloth or to poor cloth, gently or hard.

The international methods for measuring dimensional change after domestic laundering are ISO 6330 and ISO 5077, with ISO 3759 for specimen preparation. They define the procedure, not a figure for any given fibre.
