Why Is There a Turtle in Collezione Toscana?

Some people may wonder: why did we choose a turtle for a collection inspired by Tuscany?

At first glance, the question is natural. A turtle often brings to mind the sea, warm waters, and coastal landscapes—images that do not immediately match the classic image many people have of Tuscany. The answer is simple: because for MI RE LA, Tuscany is far more than one familiar image.

It is not only rolling hills, vineyards, olive trees, and cypress-lined roads in golden afternoon light. Tuscany is also Florence, Siena, Pisa, and Lucca; Renaissance art, ancient architecture, hidden artisan workshops, medieval stone villages, natural thermal springs, the wild Maremma, the Argentario, and the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. It is a land where history, water, nature, and beauty have lived together for centuries. And the turtle belongs to this world more deeply than it may seem.

Beyond the Postcard Countryside

When people think of Tuscany, their minds often drift to the countryside. And of course, that image is true. Tuscany has some of the most beautiful rural landscapes in Italy, with quiet farmhouses overlooking soft hills, olive groves, vineyards, and long tables set under the shade of ancient trees. But Tuscany also has a much older and deeper story.

Long before the Renaissance, and even before the Roman world, this land was shaped by ancient civilizations—from the Etruscans to earlier traces of human presence. In southern Tuscany, especially near the border with Lazio, history feels almost present in the landscape itself. There are places in this part of Tuscany where time seems to stand still. Small stone villages, quiet roads, natural thermal waters, wild countryside, ancient paths, and landscapes shaped by centuries of life create a suspended rhythm. In places like the Maremma, Saturnia, Pitigliano, Sovana, and Sorano, beauty is never rushed. It is ancient, quiet, natural, and deeply connected to the land. This is the Tuscany that inspired our collection: not a postcard, but a feeling.

The Symbolism of the Turtle

The turtle was chosen because it carries a meaning deeply connected to this slower, older, and more natural side of Tuscany. It represents slowness, protection, longevity, balance, and quiet strength. It does not rush. It does not need to be loud. Its beauty is calm, grounded, and discreet.

This is exactly the spirit we wanted for Collezione Toscana. MI RE LA is built around the idea that the table is far more than a functional surface. It is a moment. A pause. A ritual. A way to return to beauty in everyday life. The turtle speaks this language beautifully. It reminds us to slow down, notice the finer details, and live with more intention. In this sense, it becomes more than decoration. It becomes a symbol of the rhythm we wanted to express: warmer, more grounded, and deeply connected to nature.

The Tuscan Coast and the Caretta Caretta

Beyond symbolism, there is also a real connection between turtles and Tuscany. Along the Tuscan coast, the loggerhead sea turtle, known scientifically as Caretta caretta, has become an increasingly meaningful presence. In recent years, these ancient travelers have returned to nest along parts of the Tuscan shoreline, becoming part of the region’s natural story.

For us, this does not make the turtle a tropical or playful beach symbol. It becomes something more refined: a quiet connection to the Tuscan coast, the Maremma, the Argentario, the islands, and the Mediterranean landscape. This is why we interpreted the motif in taupe tones on off-white linen. We did not want it to feel bright, decorative, or overly marine. We wanted it to feel natural, elegant, and understated—a quiet nod to the Mediterranean landscape, executed with subtlety.

A Fragile, Ancient Beauty

The turtle also reminds us of something more important: the fragility of the natural world. Sea turtles are among the most ancient creatures on earth, yet today they face serious modern challenges, from marine pollution and plastic waste to coastal development, boat traffic, artificial lighting near nesting areas, and climate change.

A shoreline may look simple to us. For a turtle, it can be a place of life, continuity, and survival. At MI RE LA, we do not see nature only as decoration. We see it as inspiration, but also as something to respect. The turtle reminds us that elegance should never be disconnected from awareness. It invites us to look more closely, move more slowly, and remember that the natural world is part of the beauty we bring into our homes.

The Embroidery

Within Collezione Toscana, the turtle appears as a refined embroidered detail. The taupe thread creates a soft, organic contrast against the off-white linen, giving the piece a natural and understated character. The design is intentionally discreet. It does not dominate the table. It adds presence without excess.

This approach is central to the MI RE LA aesthetic. Our embroidery is never meant to shout. It is meant to be discovered. It should feel like a detail that belongs naturally to the fabric, as though it had always been there. The turtle motif pairs beautifully with linen because it shares many of the material’s own qualities: strength, texture, natural irregularity, softness, and quiet elegance.

A Harmonious Collection

Every embroidered motif within Collezione Toscana has its own reason:

The Bee

recalls gardens, countryside life, and the quiet work of nature.

The Lavender

evokes calm, scent, and Mediterranean softness.

The Dragonfly

suggests light, water, and delicate movement.

The Coral

connects the collection to the Tuscan coast and the Mediterranean Sea.

The Turtle

brings together nature, time, protection, longevity, and slow living.

Together, these motifs create a more complete portrait of Tuscany. Not just the hills. Not just the coast. Not just the history. But all of these elements woven together. The turtle belongs to Collezione Toscana because it tells a story of time: ancient landscapes, quiet waters, natural beauty, and the quiet elegance of moving slowly. With its quiet presence, it tells that story beautifully.
