Placemats you can wash instead of replace.

Each placemat is made of two parts. An embroidered linen cover, and a structured core that holds the circle flat on the table instead of letting it curl at the edges. The cover lifts off, so a dinner that went well does not have to end with a mark you live with for years.

The linen is cut, sewn and embroidered in Italy, one motif at a time. The coated finish keeps a spill sitting on the surface long enough to wipe it promptly, which is what you want when a glass goes over halfway through a meal. It is not waterproof, and it is not heat protection: anything coming straight from the oven or the stovetop still needs a trivet.

Round, 13.8 inches across, sold in sets of two. That diameter sits under a dinner plate and also works in place of a charger, so one object does two jobs and the table looks composed with less on it.

Questions

What size are these placemats?

Round, 13.8 inches across, or 35 cm, and sold as a set of two. That is a standard place setting diameter: it holds a dinner plate comfortably and still leaves room for glasses and cutlery on a table of ordinary width.

Can the embroidered cover be washed?

Yes. Lift the cover off the core and machine wash it at 30°C, 40 at the most. Press it through a clean cloth at medium heat, and a light press is fine even with the cover back on the core. The core itself stays out of the water and keeps its shape, so the placemat behaves like linen rather than like a disposable mat. The full routine is in how to care for coated linen.

Are coated linen placemats waterproof?

No. The coating keeps a spill on the surface long enough to be wiped promptly rather than soaking straight through. Liquid left sitting will still find its way in, and the coating does nothing against heat. What coated linen actually is, and what it does not do, is explained in full here.

Can I use them as chargers?

Yes. At 13.8 inches they sit under a dinner plate the way a charger does, which is why many of our clients use one object for both. The difference between the two, and when you actually need both, is explained in our guide to chargers and placemats.

Do you need placemats on a wood table?

Not for looks. For what a long meal does to a finish: condensation rings from cold glasses, drips, and the slow abrasion of plates being set down and pulled back. What each surface can take, and what it cannot, is in our guide to protecting a wood table.

Placemats or a tablecloth?

For everyday meals, placemats are usually enough and they leave the table visible. A cloth makes more sense when the mess spreads beyond the settings, and for a formal dinner the two are layered. The full comparison is in placemats or a tablecloth.

Where are they made?

Cut, sewn and embroidered in Italy. The flax itself is grown in the linen belt of western Europe, which is where nearly all fine European linen begins.
